Usability Test
A Usability Test is an empirical evaluation method in which real users are observed interacting with a digital or physical product in realistic scenarios. The method uncovers weak points and barriers in the user experience and delivers prioritized recommendations for action, before usability problems negatively affect brand perception or revenue.
How a lack of usability can have a negative impact on brand perception and sales
Many companies face the challenge of developing digital and haptic products that are intuitive and user-friendly. There is often a lack of in-depth knowledge about how real users interact with a website, app or software. Without this insight, there is a risk that usability issues go undetected, leading to user frustration, increased bounce rates and ultimately lost revenue. A poor user experience can also have a negative impact on brand perception and make customer loyalty more difficult.
Usability tests: identify weak points and improve user-friendliness
Our usability tests offer a targeted and effective method for checking and optimizing the user-friendliness of your haptic or digital products. By observing and analyzing the behavior of real users in realistic usage scenarios, we identify weaknesses and barriers in the user experience. Our experts carry out these tests under controlled conditions using state-of-the-art technologies to record and analyze user interactions. The results provide detailed insights into the user experience and reveal specific problem areas that require improvement. Based on the test results, we develop concrete recommendations and proposed solutions to help you significantly improve the usability of your product. In this way, you can ensure that your digital products are not only functional, but also intuitive and pleasant to use, which strengthens the satisfaction and loyalty of your users.
Our usability tests meet the highest standards
Usability tests are our bread and butter - we have many years of experience with (almost) all types of haptic and digital products.
We offer a genuine expert analysis: an expert evaluation of the test results for well-founded recommendations for action.
We test under conditions of use that are as real as possible to ensure authentic results: either at home via online interviews, in the studio with appropriate materials or in diary studies in which we accompany users for weeks.
If desired, we also use app-based methods such as eye tracking to analyze user interaction in greater depth.
We use a mixed-methods approach: in addition to pure observation, we also use elements of in-depth interviews and UX tools such as card sorting, validated questionnaires and persona exploration to design the usability tests according to your wishes.
FAQs
What is a Usability Test – and what is it not?
A Usability Test is an empirical method in which real users are observed interacting with a product, in order to identify weak points and barriers in the user experience. What a Usability Test is not: not a market research instrument (it does not measure preferences or purchase intentions), not an A/B test (it explains the why behind behaviors, not just the what) and not an expert assessment. It is the most direct method for understanding how real people actually deal with a product.
Which products is a Usability Test suitable for?
Usability Tests are suitable for digital products such as websites, apps and software, but also for physical products. Our team in Munich and Cologne has many years of experience with almost all types of products and adapts the test methodology individually to your specific product and target group.
What results do I get after the Usability Test?
You receive a detailed results report with prioritized recommendations for action that concretely shows where the biggest usability problems lie and how they can be specifically resolved. All insights are prepared in such a way that they can feed directly into product development and UX optimization.
How many participants are needed for a Usability Test?
The often-cited rule of thumb from Jakob Nielsen states that five participants uncover about 85% of the serious usability problems. However, this applies to homogeneous target groups and qualitative tests. For heterogeneous target groups or multiple user groups, 5 participants per segment are recommended. Quantitative usability tests, in which statistical metrics such as task completion rate or time-on-task are to be measured, require significantly larger samples – typically 30 to 100+ participants.
At what point in the development process should a Usability Test be conducted?
Usability Tests make sense in almost every development phase – from early prototypes to the finished product. They are particularly valuable before a launch, after major redesigns or when usage data points to problems. Our team in Munich and Cologne advises you on the optimal test strategy for your project.
